John Stackhouse Apartment is set on the ground floor of the beautiful Acton Castle, with mesmerising views across Mount’s Bay past St Michael’s Mount. This sea view apartment has a big open-plan living area and sleeps four guests across two bedrooms. The apartment has private parking, and the castle is perfectly positioned to enjoy miles of coast path and picturesque scenery.
Acton Castle was built in 1775 for John Stackhouse – and named for his wife Susanna née Acton. John Stackhouse was an enthusiastic marine biologist (before such a term existed) and pushed forward the boundaries of science, especially in the analysis and categorisation of seaweed, which was his special passion. Connections also lead to ‘The King of Prussia’ AKA John Carter, Cornwall’s most famous smuggler who was a caretaker for John Stackhouse at the castle. Acton Castle was designed to make the most of its commanding position overlooking Mount’s Bay—one of Cornwall’s most breathtaking coastal stretches. Now a fascinating piece of local heritage and a Grade II listed building, the castle has been transformed into seven exclusive residences, each offering a unique blend of history and modern comfort.
Located on the ground floor, John Stackhouse Apartment enjoys uninterrupted sea views of Mount’s Bay and a spacious open-plan living area, creating the perfect setting for relaxed coastal living.
Inside
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by an unexpectedly spacious and airy open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area. The castle’s charming windows frame breathtaking sea views across St Michael’s Mount towards Penzance, adding a sense of timeless beauty to your stay.
The living area is designed for comfort, featuring a smart TV with a sound system, a large plush sofa, and two inviting armchairs. A large mirror reflects the coastal light, enhancing the apartment’s airy feel and brightening the space throughout the day. A separate office nook provides a quiet retreat for those needing to catch up on work during their stay.
The well-equipped kitchen and dining area is perfect for gathering over home-cooked meals, with a large round dining table that seats all guests. Enjoy your morning coffee while soaking in the sea views—it’s a wonderful way to start the day.
The apartment offers two bedrooms, one with a king-size bed, the other a double bed as well as ample storage space. A family bathroom with a shower and an additional WC ensures convenience for all guests.
Outside
The communal outdoor area at the front of the castle is a tranquil space to enjoy throughout the day, with ponds, plenty of seating, and stunning panoramic views—especially magical at sunset.
You’ll have the convenience of private parking next to the apartment, plus an additional space at the rear. But one of the true highlights of this location is its direct access to the South West Coast Path. Whether you fancy a leisurely stroll down to the nearby coves or a more adventurous hike along Mount’s Bay, the coastline is quite literally on your doorstep.
Things we love
We love the sense of history here, but Acton Castle also makes an ideal base-camp for exploring Mount’s Bay. A short stroll past imposing Cudden Point and tiny Piskies Cove brings you to iconic Prussia Cove—where you might imagine brandy and tobacco being smuggled in from a passing square-rigger on a moonless night. For sandy beaches you are spoilt for choice with Perranuthnoe beach to the west and Praa Sands to the east. Both are walkable along the coast path, or a quicker short drive, and are lifeguarded in the summer season. We really like Perranuthnoe village, with its seafront café The Cabin, perfect for lunches and brunches, coffee or beers. And check out the Victoria Inn, reputed to be one of the oldest in Cornwall, with award winning food and a cracking log fire in winter—excellent Sunday lunches (booking advised). For even more heritage head to Porthleven harbour (Cota is one of Cornwall’s best restaurants), or to Penzance, and wander the independent shops in Chapel Street, to the actual Admiral Benbow pub—not much has changed since Long John Silver’s day. While you are in Penzance you have to swim in Jubilee Pool, the iconic art deco sea-water lido, heated by geothermal energy in the rocks far below! We could go on… Mousehole, St Michael’s Mount, St Ives. You’ll be exhausted. Luckily you can bumble home to John Stackhouse Apartment, rustle up something impressive (maybe seafood bought day-fresh by the quay in Newlyn!) and chillax before starting again the next day.
