To celebrate English Wine Week 2023 this week, we caught up with our friends at Old Chapel Cellars, a leading independent wine merchants in Truro who promote several Cornish winemakers from their shop in the heart of the city.
Over the past few decades, the English wine industry has experienced significant growth and gained recognition for producing high-quality wines. But what makes England the perfect place? England’s cool climate and chalky soils have proven to be well-suited for growing grapes and producing wines.
Sparkling wine has become a specialty of English winemakers. These wines are often made from classic grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. English sparkling wines have earned numerous accolades in international wine competitions and are regarded as some of the finest sparkling wines outside of Champagne. Go us!
Here at Old Chapel Cellars in Truro we stock a select range of English wines by the bottle, all locally produced here in Cornwall. Camel Valley is very well known for its sparkling wines — their Camel Valley Brut was actually drunk at the King’s Coronation lunch this year! We also stock wines from Knightor Winery who produce a fantastic fizz as well as some beautiful still wines that are perfect paired with Cornish seafood!
Our wildcard for English wines has to be The Uncommon English Wine in a can! I know, canned wine sounds a little crazy, but trust us when we say canned wine is well and truly becoming a thing. Canned wine has a smaller carbon footprint compared to glass bottles due to its lighter weight and, being a B-Corp certified business, we are always looking at ways to be more sustainable. Not only is canned wine better for the environment, it also keeps the wine super fresh and allows you to pour the perfect serving every time!
So whether you’re a wine enthusiast or new to the world of wine, come and pay us a visit at Old Chapel Cellars on St Clements Street, Truro. Our friendly team looks forward to welcoming you!
